The Samaritan Center
The Samaritan Center for Counseling and Pastoral Care is a private, not-for-profit, interfaith counseling center. The Center offers faith-based mental health counseling to adults, children, individuals, couples and families of all ages in offices throughout central Texas. The Center also provides workshops, educational seminars and training opportunities for clergy, congregations, civic groups, employers and other community organizations on a variety of mental health topics. Services are provided regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. In 2007, the center provided nearly 1,506 individuals with 8,417 counseling sessions (20% of whom are Presbyterian). Approximately 15% of Presbyterian clients are from Covenant Presbyterian Church, twice as many as any other church.
When:
There are no fixed volunteer days or hours. The contact for Samaritan Counseling Center, Julia Alejandre, will work with you to tailor a volunteer experience appropriate for your available time and experience.
How can I help/participate?
You can help the center by
- helping develop relationships with Austin area congregations through information exchange regarding center services.
- helping with special events.
- seeking community representatives for board membership.
- donating goods and services for silent auctions in conjunction with the center’s special events designed to help raise money to provide counseling scholarships.
A number of volunteer opportunities may be possible for both mental health professionals and volunteers with no previous experience. Administrative help may also be a possibility. These experiences can be arranged to suit the volunteers’ interests, time and talents. Please contact Julia Alejandre (see below) for more information.
