Senegal

Covenant is engaged in a strategic partnership with World Vision in the Tattaguine region of Senegal, West Africa. World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. The group works to transform the lives of the world’s poorest children and families in nearly 100 countries, including the United States.

A key part of Covenant’s work with World Vision is sponsoring children in the Tattaguine Area Development Plan in central Senegal. Through child sponsorships ($35 per month), about 200 Covenant families directly support 250 children and their families. These Covenant families communicate with their sponsored child through letters, making the child, the situation and his/her hope real and personal.

Covenant also supports the work in Tattaguine through school construction, micro-enterprise programs, water security, nutritional, medical and agricultural assistance. Covenant has helped fund an annual local evangelistic outreach called “Project Jericho” that has reached thousands of Senegalese with the good news of Jesus. New initiatives in 2008 have included mosquito net and school book drives, and the development of “sister-school” relationships between AISD middle schools and the three middle schools in the Tattaguine region.

When:
Covenant sends a team each year to take part in “Project Jericho,” meet with sponsored children and plan new projects with our partner villages. The next trip will be in early March, 2010 and will include opportunities for medical and dental professionals.

Help is also needed throughout the year with coordinating and promoting child sponsorship, mosquito net and book drives, helping coordinate the middle school partnership program, making kiosk displays, preparing special gifts for sponsored children, and praying for our families in Senegal.

How can I help/participate?
To help with the Senegal mission, you can

  • sponsor a child through World Vision.
  • administer the Covenant sponsorship program by helping publicize semi-annual sponsorship opportunities on the patio.
  • prepare periodic reports and publicity via church publications, flyers and kiosk displays.
  • create scrapbooks and video compilations to preserve the record of our Senegal mission.
  • travel to Senegal and visit the Tattaguine project. On the ten-day trip, members attend an evangelical event, visit the villages where we sponsor children, and visit related missions in the area as emissaries for Christ.
  • help on the patio with mosquito net and school book drives.
  • help coordinate the new partnerships between local middle schools and schools in Tattaguine. Contact Donna Vliet at donnavliet@mac.com for more information.
  • act a “sender,” attending the preparatory meetings and learning about this project, and the culture and language of the people. Senders take the traveling team to the airport to see them off and receive them back. The senders keep the congregation informed of the team’s progress.
