Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Think about the person in your childhood who shared new experiences and ideas with you. Perhaps it was a teacher, a coach or a grandmother. They introduced some magic in your world and your eyes opened like wildflowers. Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BBBS) helps boys and girls achieve their potential through positive adult relationships. BBBS is the premier one-on-one mentoring organization in the world. When mentored in the BBBS program, little brothers and sisters are

  • 52% less likely to skip school.
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
  • more likely to get along with their families and peers.
All “Littles” (100%) who stay in the program for a year and graduate from high school or earn a GED receive a $2000 scholarship.

Who and when:
A Community-Based “Big” is an adult volunteer, age 18 and older, who spends time with his or her “Little” three times a month for a minimum of one year.

“Bigs” in Schools are adult volunteers, age 18 and older, who are matched with a “Little” in a local elementary or middle school for one hour each week, usually during lunch. The “Big” engages in various activities with the “Little,” such as playing on the playground, or just hanging out and talking.
