Texas Wildfire Relief
Sept. 6, 2011
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
All of us at Covenant are alarmed by the wildfires surrounding our city that are destroying the homes and property of our friends, our families and fellow Texans. These fires are harming many of the places we call home. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are suffering, and many of us are eager to help.
At this time, the individuals and families affected by the fires need food, water and shelter. The best way to help these people is to support the agencies already set up to provide this type of immediate assistance (see list below).
Later, when families return to their homes, there will be numerous opportunities to serve. Available volunteers should contact Joe Denton, who is the Disaster Coordinator of our mission committee at 512-636-2584).
Let's unite in prayer for God's mercy and help in a true time of need for our neighborhood.
In Christ's Service,
The Covenant Missions Committee
The following is a list of the local organizations best suited to fill immediate needs:
The Red Cross reaches all the areas involved and has the credentials to get in ahead of most other relief groups. Financial donations are generally the preferred assistance.
The Austin Disaster Relief network has set up a number of donation sites in both the Austin area and Smithville. You can donate online and volunteer through this organization.
The Capital Area Food Bank is accepting donations at its Austin location: 8201 South Congress Ave. The items needed most include: canned meats (pop-top lids or foil packets) granola bars, peanut butter, bottled water and other healthy and non-perishable food items.
Texas Wildfire Relief assists volunteer fire departments and their families.
This county office is updating citizens on its Facebook page and is accepting financial donations through the Bastrop Christian Ministerial Alliance: (512) 332-8661 or (512)-332-8977.
